Uber to Suspend Edmonton Service Until it has Insurance

March 1st, 2016  |  News

Edmonton’s new bylaws came into effect this morning. Uber drivers as well as any other ride-sharing drivers to adhere to a set of standard regulations that include police checks, city fees and a requirement for both provincially approved insurance and a valid Class 4 driving licence.

And because it currently can’t meet these regulations Uber’s general manager for Alberta announced today that service is temporarily suspended. According to CBC, the government says approved insurance for ride-sharing is coming July 1, it’s likely Uber won’t resume operations in the city until that time.

While Aviva has a ride-sharing option on their policies in Ontario, they’ve yet to get anything approved in Alberta. At the same time, Intact has been developing an insurance policy to cover ride-sharing and while it’s not clear if this is the same policy the government says is being approved, Uber Alberta’s manager said that drivers won’t have to buy extra insurance as Uber itself will buy the policy for its whole fleet of drivers that will cover them when they pick up passengers.
