Tesla recalls 11,000 Model X SUVs

October 12th, 2017  |  Canadian Business

Tesla announced Thursday that they are conducting a voluntary worldwide recall of 11,000 of their Model X SUVs. The recall consists of Model X SUVs with fold down second row seats made between October 28, 2016 and August 16, 2017, and is due to a manufacturing error that may affect, what Tesla is claiming to be, 3% of the vehicles.

According to Tesla, some of the cables in the second row seats may have been improperly tightened during the manufacturing stage. This issue prevents the seat from locking in an upright position, and when improperly locked could cause the seat to move forward in the event of a crash.

"During recent internal testing, Tesla determined that a small number of cables in the second row fold-flat seats in some 2016 and 2017 Model X vehicles may need to be adjusted," Tesla told CNBC in a statement. "Although Tesla has not received reports of any issues or accidents relating to this condition, we will be conducting a voluntary recall to inspect the affected vehicles and confirm whether any adjustment is needed."

This isn’t the first time Tesla has had to recall their vehicles. In 2014 they recalled almost 30,000 Model S sedans worldwide because of a charging defect that posed a fire hazard. Then the next year, 90,000 of the same model were recalled because of a possible seatbelt defect. And last year 2,700 Model X SUVs in the United States were recalled due to a to a faulty locking hinge in the third-row seats.
