Tesla Announces Model 3 Announcement

February 17th, 2016  |  News

When a huge new product is gonna hit the market you don’t just show it to people. You gotta build buzz. We see it all the time with Hollywood blockbusters getting about a million teasers and trailers before the movie comes out and it seems to work. Elon Musk seems to have taken a page out of the Hollywood playbook by announcing when the world will get its first look at the new Tesla Model 3.

On March 31 the company will unveil their first mainstream market-friendly electric vehicle, but don’t expect to see it on the road any time soon. According to Driving.ca the Model 3 will go into production late 2017, making it likely for early buyers to actually receive their cars in 2018.

With a history of delays and production issues Tesla is probably trying to play it safe from here on out. The Model 3 represents the company’s opportunity to finally turn a profit for the first time in its short history.

Rumoured to come with an approximate $35,000 price tag, the Model 3 is a far cry from its older siblings, which will set you back around $80,000 on the low end. The new Model X crossover is well over $100,000.

That price point will make the Model 3 an outlier in the industry especially considering the claim that the car will get 300 km on a single charge, utterly blowing away the current competition in the affordable electric market. Despite Chevrolet’s plans to release a similarly priced full electric vehicle with comparable range by the end of the year, Musk doesn’t view the Chevy Bolt as their competition.

“You should think of the Model 3 as sort of really competing in kind of the BMW 3 series or Audi A4 market,” says Musk.

Affordable luxury is an attractive prospect for many buyers, who appreciate slick designs and reputable quality. It’ll be interesting to see exactly what features the Model 3 will have to cut back on compared to the pricier models.
