Takata airbag recall expands to 69 million vehicles

May 11th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Bad news is about to come to even more drivers as Takata announces recalls for 35 million to 40 million vehicles with faulty airbags.

Already the largest automotive recall in history at 28.8 million affected vehicles, Takata is blowing the record wide open by expanding the list of affected vehicles. According to Driving.ca, the massive recall will take just over 3 more years to complete with plans to be finished at the end of 2019. The recall has been ongoing since 2014. In that time only 28% of the recalled vehicles have been fixed.

Now with the expansion, airbag manufacturers will need to accelerate the production of replacement parts in order to meet the recall goal.

The breakdowns of the specific models and number of cars was not released, but most of the added vehicles are to replace front passenger airbags that were not a part of previous recalls. The faulty airbags are missing a chemical drying agent. However the recall won’t cover side airbags missing the agent.

The faulty airbags have killed 11 and caused injury to over 100 by exploding with too much force and hurling fragments upon being deployed.
