SGI to Increase Penalties for Risky Drivers

November 25th, 2015  |  Auto

The Saskatchewan Government Insurance agency is about to make some changes to their safe driver recognition program and it’s going to save some people money but cost others.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, they announced that the provincial government approved their recommendations and will be implementing them in the new year.

Under the new system, the SGI premium system will continue with their neutral, penalty, and safety “zones” for drivers but there will be new categories under the “safety” classification.

Those in the safety zone will be identified as either a good driver, great driver, or safest driver. This will influence what kind of discount SGI will offer the customer, up to 25 per cent for those with excellent records.

Those in the neutral zone will continue to pay the base premium but others in the penalty zone can expect to pay more.

Financial penalties will double for those in the penalty zone, going from $25 to $50 per point.

“Drivers who cause a collision or get a traffic conviction that moves them into the Penalty Zone, or further down the Zone, pay a penalty of $50 per point,” SGI stated Tuesday of the new program.

In addition, all at-fault accidents will lead to lost points but, SGI said, they will also take the seriousness of the accident into consideration when making their decision.

The safe driver recognition program was first implemented in 2002.
