NDP Budget Under Fire from Tories, Conservatives

August 30th, 2015  |  News

As NDP lead the polls, the Tories and Conservatives have finally found something they agree on and it’s the NDP budget. Since its release, the New Democrat’s fiscal platform has drawn criticism from both parties about the feasibility of their follow through.

Some of the campaign promises include a national child-care program, more funding for the CBC and larger gas tax payments for municipal governments. Conservative runner Jason Kenney argued the New Democrats budget will require $13.8 billion in new funding.

“We cannot afford the NDP,” Kenney warned. He went on to say the only way the party could afford their platform is through “massive tax hikes for Canadian families” that “would wreck our economy.”

The Liberals chimed in with their own concerns, stating that NDP promises would cost Canadians closer to $28 billion in new money. John McCallum, Liberal candidate, stated the NDP leader needs to “come clean” with Canadians. “He is offering a phoney set of promises that he has no intention of keeping.”

Tom Muclair, the New Democrat leader, defended the party’s pledges, stating they’ve thoroughly costed everything and the budget balances. He went on to say that the Tories and Liberals were desperate to halt the momentum the NDP were enjoying before the October 19 election.
