National Bank customer information exposed thanks to IT error

September 20th, 2017  |  Canadian Business

The personal contact information and date of birth of hundreds of National Bank customers may have been exposed to other customers. The bank confirmed to CBC Toronto that over several days almost 400 customers across Canada may have been affected.

"We were notified earlier this week of an issue related to an electronic form used on our website. The issue was resolved immediately," said National Bank senior director Jean-François Cadieux. "No address, Social Insurance Number or any banking information have been disclosed.

National Bank claims that the customer information was revealed due to an IT error on their website. According to Cadieux, when a customer was filling out a form online, they were able to see the contact information of the customer who has filled out the same form before them.

A National Bank customer alerted CBC Toronto to the issue, stating that he was contacted by another customer who was attempting to book an appointment with the bank online, and saw his contact information. When the customer tried to fill in their contact information, they found the online form already filled out with another customer’s information.

National Bank is chalking up the IT mishap to “human error” and is working with the potentially impacted customers to help protect their accounts through free credit monitoring surveillance.
