Mississauga votes against ride-sharing until further notice

May 12th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

The Mississauga city council wants to figure out how to regulate Uber, but until they do, they don’t want it or any other ride-sharing company to operate in the city.

BlogTO reported that the council voted unanimously to ban transportation network companies from operating in the city unless they agree to follow taxi regulations. That means Uber has to cut off service in Mississauga until later this year when the council plans on look at proposals for how they could integrate a ride-sharing “pilot program”.

It’s surprising that Mississauga would consider moving in a different direction in regards to Uber than Toronto, where many of its riders likely end up. But at least there is still a chance for the service to return if the committee finds a model for ride-sharing  regulations that both they and Uber find acceptable.
