This March Break, Don’t Forget to Pack Travel Insurance

March 9th, 2016  |  Travel

From spontaneous adventurers to resort relaxers, there are a few different kinds of vacationers in Canada, and they all remember to pack a few essential items, but more than half of them forget to take a travel insurance policy.

A recent survey by RBC Insurance reveals the preparation habits of Canadian vacationers. According to the results, respondents are most likely to make sure to bring their passport with 75% of them saying they’d never leave home without it. The second most important item for them is there electronics of course with 53% saying they’d make sure they have it. Medication is third with 49% saying they’d never leave without it.

These results probably aren’t too surprising. If anything you might have expected more people to bring their passports. But the survey also revealed that 55% of the respondents would travel without insurance.

The trend lies primarily with young adults (18 - 34). Only 26% of the respondents in that age group said travel insurance was a must have when travelling.

When it comes to styles of travellers, RBC asked respondents to classify themselves as the following kinds of travellers:

'Play-it-by-Ear Pilgrims' (44 per cent) plan on where they're going, but after that they see where the journey takes them.

'Timid Trekkers' (18 per cent) don't stray far from their comfort zone while on vacation.

'Scheduled Sightseers' (13 per cent) plan every minute of vacation so it fits within a tightly-packed schedule.

'Armchair Adventurers' (13 per cent) are happy to sit back and relax, and leave the adventures to others.

'Risk-Taking Rovers' (11 per cent) fear being bored, so they seek adventure at every turn.

When it comes to who is taking out travel policies here’s who ranks first by percentage of respondents who took policies:

  1. Scheduled Sightseers (50%)
  2. Timid Trekkers (49%)
  3. Play-it-by-Ear Pilgrims (47%)
  4. Risk-taking Rovers (42%)
  5. Armchair Adventurers (32%)

It’s noteworthy that the most cautious travellers are the ones that make sure to take travel insurance the most often. Even if you aren’t going out and taking risks while on vacation, you could still have an emergency while trying to enjoy your time away and for that reason whether you’re an armchair adventurer or risk-taking rover you should find yourself the right travel insurance policy.
