Insurers Race to Deliver Ride-Share Insurance to Edmonton’s Uber Drivers

February 2nd, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Last week Edmonton became the first Canadian municipality to officially legalize Uber. In early January, Aviva announced the upcoming launch of its ride-share insurance, the first coverage plan designed for Uber and other ride-share drivers in Canada. If only the two milestones happened in the same province.

Uber drivers will be able to legally pick up paying passengers as of March 1, but first they need proper auto insurance. Now Aviva and Intact are both vying to bring specialized ride-share coverage to Edmonton.

In a statement to Global News, Uber indicated that it is currently working with Intact, and that the two organizations have been speaking with regulators in Alberta. Meanwhile, Uber reports that it has not fully reviewed Aviva’s proposal.

But Aviva has no intention of being left behind as ride-share insurance expands across Canada.

Jason Storah, senior vice president at Aviva, has voiced his enthusiasm about delivering ride-share insurance to Alberta Uber drivers. He reportedly welcomes Intact’s competition, at least for the sake of consumers.

However, it took months for Aviva to roll out its ride-share insurance in Ontario. The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO), only recently approved Aviva’s coverage.

So the clock is ticking. Ideally, the two ride-share timelines would match up: ride-share coverage would become available in Edmonton around the same time that Uber officially becomes legal.
