InFlight Emergency Forces Plane to Land in Halifax

August 5th, 2015  |  Travel

Air Canada flight 682 was forced to land in Halifax after an emergency occurred inflight. The aircraft was originally bound for Deer Lake, Newfoundland, with 93 passengers on board when it experienced an air pressurization problem that forced the oxygen air masks to deploy.

It was redirected to Halifax Stanfield International Airport where it landed safely at 6:30pm Wednesday. There were no passenger injuries reported.

The aircraft, an Embraer E90, has been grounded by Air Canada until the source of the air pressurization issue is solved. Passengers have been given the option to rebook their flight to after their original didn’t make it.

This was not the first Air Canada emergency landing at Halifax’s Stanfield Airport this year, however. In March, Air Canada Flight 624 was trying to land when it hit an antennae array at the Halifax airport and crash after losing its main landing gear.

“During this impact, the aircraft collided with a localizer antenna array…and became airborne again, travelling forward on Runway 05.”

This was said by Mike Cunningham, Transportation Safety Board regional manager of air investigations, in a March statement. The plane skidded for 1100 feet, injuring 25 of the 133 passengers and causing significant damage to the Airbus aircraft. Investigation is ongoing into the cause of the accident. No major injuries were reported by passengers or crew.
