Family’s Uninsured Home Destroyed by Vicious Fire in Brampton

December 13th, 2015  |  Home

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. For Parveen Thaper, that age-old adage was likely never as true as it was on Saturday night. On December 12, a vicious fire blazed through eight Brampton townhomes, including Thaper’s. Fortunately, everyone was safely evacuated and no one was seriously injured. However the incident occurred right after Thaper had cancelled her home insurance policy because she couldn’t afford the payments.

The fire rapidly spread from rooftop to rooftop, destroying a row of houses and forcing 14 tenants into temporary homelessness. According to the Toronto Star, Brampton firefighters extinguished the flames on Sunday morning. At this time, officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but they reportedly do not suspect arson. Some families were able to stay with family or friends, but others had to turn to shelters. Thaper’s family had to relocate to the Peel Family Shelter.

Thaper’s story is just one emotional story emerging from this terrible fire. As a single mom to two 20-year old children, she had recently cancelled her home insurance because it was too expensive. Without coverage, she won’t receive any financial support from an insurance provider. She will be left to pay the full cost of repairs and replacements on her own. Her children created a GoFundMe page in the hopes of raising enough money to give their family a new start.

This devastating event urges others to lend support to the Brampton families who lost their homes. It also stresses the importance of protecting your home and your loved ones. Insurance may seem like a dispensable cost amid other necessary expenses, but a home insurance policy can save you from crippling financial burdens.
