Dash Cam Helps Send ‘Crazy PEI Driver’ to Jail

February 12th, 2016  |  Auto

While installing a dash cam won’t necessarily lower your car insurance, it can definitely give you or the authorities an impartial perspective should something happen on the road. A driver in PEI found that out the hard way when dash cam footage of his wild wipeout provided the perfect evidence to convict him of dangerous driving.

Steven Green, the 32 year old star of the YouTube video titled “Crazy PEI Driver” has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced on Tuesday this week according to The Humboldt Journal. For all his wild swerving behind the wheel, Green will be serving 10 days in jail as well as being banned from getting behind the wheel for nine months.

It was a stroke of luck that the truck behind Green’s Porsche had a dash cam. For prosecutors, dash cam footage can be very useful, acting as the best witness they could ever ask for.

The video shows Green putting the pedal to the metal as soon as a traffic light turns green. Very quickly however the car begins veering out of control, hitting the concrete median and entering oncoming traffic before losing a wheel and coming to a stop.

The video takes place in what was clearly a winter day which could initially give the impression that Green maybe wasn’t using winter tires, but the truth is somewhat hairier.

According to Green, his dog accidentally stepped on a control button and fell into the driver’s side wheel well.

While dangerous driving can be one of the most serious traffic violations in some cases, the Crown took it easy on Green. The maximum sentence under the criminal code is six months, a lenient compromise considering Green’s two previous violations.

While he won’t be driving any time soon, three violations on his record is sure to jack up his car insurance rate. At least his wallet is the only thing coming out of this hurt.
