Another airbag recall? This time its Fiat Chrysler

September 19th, 2016  |  Auto

The past two years have seen some of the biggest automotive recalls ever with the Volkswagen diesel scandal and the Takata airbag inflator fiasco. Now nearly 2 million more vehicles are being recalled worldwide for unsafe airbags.

Fiat Chrysler is issuing a recall for many of its 2010 - 2014 model Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Lancia vehicles. The large majority of the affected vehicles are in the U.S. but about 225,000 were sold in Canada according to Driving.ca.

The cause for the recall is a faulty wiring design for the airbag and seatbelt safety module responsible for deploying during crashes. Where normally, a crash would trigger the airbag to inflate and the seatbelt to tighten, helping keep the driver and passengers safe, the malfunctioning modules won’t do anything, leading to much higher risk of injury.

The defect has already been linked to three deaths and five injuries. Fiat Chrysler will contact owners and repair vehicles for free. Affected vehicles include these models:

  • 2010 Chrysler Sebring
  • 2010 Chrysler Cirrus
  • 2011 - 2014 Chrysler 200
  • 2010 - 2012 Dodge Caliber
  • 2010 - 2014 Dodge Avenger
  • 2010 - 2014 Jeep Compass
  • 2010 - 2014 Jeep Patriot
  • 2012-2013 Lancia
