Tips to make your home more energy efficient

March 13th, 2013  |  Insurance

Now more than ever, homeowners across Ontario have greater concern for the imprint they leave on the environment. They not only look to buy homes that are energy efficient, they also are increasingly investing in energy efficient renovation projects for their home.

Whether you are looking to make a number of quick and simple changes or are looking at larger renovation projects, there are a large number of energy efficient projects that homeowners can implement to reduce the amount of energy used.

Energy efficient projects include:

  1. Replace your old and inefficient appliances (refrigerator, freezers, dishwasher, washer and dryer)
  2. Replace your old wooden windows with energy efficient windows
  3. Perform a regular seal check to ensure all doors, windows, and other openings are airtight
  4. Install a programmable thermostat
  5. Consider adding awning or placing solar film on your windows
  6. Consider replacing your old furnace with a more efficient one
  7. Check your homes insulation
  8. Use energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs

Consider a home energy audit

If you are not sure where to start, one of the best options is to get a home energy audit. Getting a home energy audit will allow a professional to come to your home, examine your home current level of efficiency, and recommend measures that could be taken to improve the overall energy efficiency of your home.

Making your home energy efficient is not only great for the environment; it will also lower the cost of your monthly energy bill.

What have you done to improve the energy efficiency of your home? Have you received a home energy audit?
