Spring Home Preparation Tips – Getting Prepped for the Nice Weather

March 20th, 2014  |  Home Insurance

With the sun peeking through the clouds and the temperature now hovering above zero, now is the time for homeowners to start getting organized and think about what you need to do to get your home ready for the spring. Yes – it’s almost time to trade in your snow shovel for a garden shovel.

Perhaps the easiest way to approach getting ready for spring is to break things down into indoor and outdoor activities that need to be completed. The good news is that we have already done that for you!

Indoor Spring Preparation Tips

Indoor spring preparation is a great place to start if only for the simple fact that you don’t have to worry about what the weather is doing. Tasks include:

  • Do a deep clean: The winter undoubtedly brings in some dirt, salt, and debris. Take this opportunity to do a deep clean inside.
  • Address wear and tear: Go through the house and look for things that need some TLC. Tighten up loose door handles, replace dated floor mats, dust, and look for other things that need attention around the house.
  • Clean out the closet: It’s time to start putting some of your winter clothing and items away and replacing them with spring items. Clean out the hall closets as well as your bedroom closet.
  • Check your basement: Spring is the perfect time to check your basement for leaks, foundation cracks and other potential problems. If you find an issue, have it look at by a professional basement contractor.

Do these tasks now before the weather gets nice or you may never get around to doing them at all – We all know how a to-do list can go out the window when the sun comes out!

Outdoor Spring Preparation Tips

Spring is traditionally a time when homeowners spend a lot of time outdoors getting prepared for the warm weather. The more work you do now, the more time you will have to enjoy the sunshine when summer finally arrives.

Here are some tips to help get your home prepared for the nice weather:

  • Do a walk around: Before getting into specific tasks, it is a good idea to do a walk around your property to look for any potential issues that have arisen during the winter. Look for cracks in your foundation, holes, and signs of pest issues.
  • Check the AC unit: Take a look at the AC unit to make sure that it is okay and did not get damaged.
  • Organize the shed/garage: It’s time to start getting out the spring garden tools and start putting away the winter tool for the season.
  •  Check your roof and eaves: Check your roof for broken shingles, clogged eaves and gutters, broken seals, and any other issues that are visible. If you are not comfortable checking your roof, get a professional to take a look.
  • Check windows, doors, and access points: Check all windows, doors, and access points for cracked seals and air leaks.

Performing these tasks help to make sure that your home is in good standing and is ready for the summer.

How do you get your home ready for the nice weather? Do you have a checklist that you follow? Do you hire a professional company to examine your home? Do you skip spring preparation altogether?
