Rural road safety tips

May 16th, 2013  |  Insurance

While most of the attention is placed on road safety tips for cities and highways, there is another area of road safety that cannot be overlooked. This is rural road safety. When compared to city roads, rural roads are less predictable and this is why we see so many accidents on these roads each year. Even though there tends to be less traffic, drivers need to pay extra attention. You never know when you will encounter a farm tractor, Mennonite buggy, or any number of unpredictable vehicles on the road.

If you are planning to take a drive down a rural road in the future, make sure that you keep the follow important road safety tips in mind:

  • Always keep an eye out for wild animals that may run out in front of your vehicle.
  • Expect to share the road with alternative vehicles such as trucks, tractors and buggies.
  • Be prepared for a breakdown. If you are on a rural road the odds are that you will have to wait a long time for a tow truck to arrive.
  • Slow down at all four way crossings. Make sure you know which lane has the right of way before proceeding.
  • Proceed with caution when passing on two lane roads. This is one of the major causes of accidents on rural roads. Make sure it is clear before you pass.
