New to Home Insurance? Information you Need to Know to Get an Accurate Quote

Whether you are new to home insurance or moving into your first home, there is a lot of information that you will need to know about your new dwelling before you move in. 

The following is a list of information that you will need to collect and provide to your home insurance provider so they can provide you with an accurate quote for home insurance for your new home.

General Information:

    • Address
    • Year the home was built
    • Square footage
    • Type of home and style
    • Number of bathrooms and type
    • Status of basement – finished or unfinished
    • Do you have pets?
    • Are people in your home non-smokers?
    • Do you have renters?
    • Is business conducted out of your home?

Home Exterior 

    • Does your home have a garage? Is it attached or detached?
    • What is the exterior finish of your home? Is it brick? Veneer? Siding? Wood?
    • What is the age of your roof?
    • Do you have a porch/deck? How big?
    • Do you have a pool? If yes, what type and when was it installed?

Home Systems

    • What type of plumbing is installed? Copper? Galvanized? Plastic? When was the plumbing last updated?
    • What type of electrical wiring is in the home? 
    • What type of electrical breaker do you have? Is it breaker or fuses? How many AMPs?
    • What type of heating and cooling system is installed? How old is the furnace?
    • Do you have a sump pump? 

This is all information that you will be asked when by insurers when it comes time to get an insurance quote. In most cases you will find all of this information on your home inspection report, so have that handy when filling out your home insurance quote. Plus, it is good to know this information as a homeowner just in case you need to address an issue that arises with your home.
