Candles have seen resurgence in the past few years. With the rise in popularity of aroma therapy and people using candles as a relaxation tool, more and more people are using them in their home. And, with the cold weather on the way, candles will be used increasing over the next few months – making it very important to review candle safety in the home.

Reducing the threat of fire, especially if you have children or pets at home is vital. All it takes is a second for a candle to ignite should and cause a fire. If you plan to use candles at home, it’s important that you do so responsibility and take the necessary safety precautions to ensure your home is safe.

To prevent a fire from occurring and to prevent burns and other potential injuries, there are a number of common sense tips all candle users must read:

  1. Make sure that you teach your children about the proper candle safety
  2. Place candle out of reach of young children
  3. Make sure that candles are away from high traffic areas where they could be knocked over, especially by pets
  4. Use a high quality candle holder – one that will support the candles you use and will not tip over
  5. Only place candles on heat resistant surfaces
  6. Avoid using candles when you could potentially fall asleep
  7. Never leave candles unattended at any time
  8. When blowing out candles, double check to make sure they are out

To eliminate the risks associated with candle use, some people are now using candles alternatives. Two of the most popular are led light candles and battery operated candles. These candles provide the same ambiance of a regular candle, without the worry or risk of causing a fire. And, they have the added bonus of being child and pet friendly as well.
