How to Slash your Car Repair Bill

February 28th, 2013  |  Insurance

Vehicle repair and maintenance is something that is often overlooked by many people. When budgeting for vehicle expenses many tend to focus on the big things like monthly car payments, insurance, and gas. But, repairs and maintenance also need to be budgeted for because they will creep up on you if you are not ready for them.

The good news is that if you take a proactive approach you can save money on how much you pay for things like oil changes, car washes, and other general maintenance.

Here are a number of tips to slash your car repair bill:

  1. Read reviews before you purchase a car: If you want to slash your repair bill, the first thing that you need to do is be smart about the car you buy. Buying a car that is known to have a history of issues will only increase your repair bill down the road.
  2. Get quotes from mechanics: Before you agree to get repairs done, get a couple of quotes for the service to be completed. The extra time you spend getting quotes can save you money.
  3. Regular maintenance: Taking your car in for regularly scheduled maintenance cannot be overstated. If you don’t take proper care of your car, it is going to cost you more money in the long run.
  4. Keep your eye out for deals: If you want to save money you need to keep your eye out for deals on repair services such as oil changes, car washes, tire rotations, etc. The saving from deals adds up over time.
  5. Do some things yourself: If you have the knowledge and ability, do some of the maintenance tasks yourself. You don’t need to pay someone to replace your wiper blades if you can do it yourself. Or, wash your car yourself instead of going through the car wash.

How do you save money on your car repair bill? What do you do to cut the maintenance costs for your vehicle?
