Home Insurance & Home Updates

September 22nd, 2011  |  Insurance

Things change with your home over time. Outside of changing locations, there are many different things that occur over time that will require that you contact your insurer to update your home insurance policy.

When things change you need to update your home insurance right away. Many people have a tendency to wait until their policy is up for renewal before they tell their insurer about changes, but this could cause a serious issue and leave you without coverage if you do not make your provider aware of changes when they occur.

While there is no shortage of potential changes, some of the most common reasons to update your insurance company is changes to the physical make up of your home through a renovation, adding a basement apartment, opening a home business, or adding a new structure on your property.

But, you should also contact your home insurance provider if you do things like update your security, build a fence, add or remove a pool or trampoline or make any major changes to your properties landscape.

If you are not sure if you need to contact your broker about a change, take a look at your insurance policy. If you are still not clear, give them a call anyway just to be on the safe side. This will ensure that there are no misunderstandings or lapses in your home insurance coverage.
