The best way to prevent break-ins is by being proactive and taking measures to protect your home. You need to install things that will deter thieves. Here are some things that you should consider installing in your home for added protection:

  • Security lights on the driveway and back yard
  • A home alarm system
  • Window locks
  • Adding a deadbolt lock on your door
  • Participation in neighborhood watch

These things will not only help you deter burglar, they can also help you qualify for a discount on your home insurance policy.

You can also do things like closing the blinds at night, and leaving lights and the radio on when you are not home to provide the allusion that you are home.  Finally, just in case you have to make a claim, you should always have a list or take video of all your belongings.
