Happy Thanksgiving! Safety Tips in the home!

October 12th, 2014  |  Home Insurance

Sitting around the table enjoying a great meal with family and friends is one of the most appealing things about the Thanksgiving holiday – not to mention an extra day off work for most people. With so much going on, running around trying to get everything prepared for dinner, and with your house full of people, things tend to get overlooked.

The Thanksgiving holiday also is known for potential hazards and safety issues that could arise around the home. With an increase in the chances of a fire, food safety issues, and many others, you need to be on your home safety game to ensure everyone has a time filled with fun, great food, and great conversation.

8 Canadian Thanksgiving Home Safety Tips

Like many other Canadians safety organizations, we at HUB Insurance Hunter want to make sure you have a safe Thanksgiving long weekend and we have put together a list of important safety consideration all households should review before hosting dinner.

Check out these home safety tips to make this Thanksgiving holiday a safe one:

  1. Stay in the kitchen when cooking and keep an eye on the food at all times. You never know when a pot could boil over and you need to be ready to take care of it immediately.
  2. Never leave children’s unattended in rooms with lit candles or in the kitchen with items cooking on the stove top.
  3. If you are deep frying a turkey for the first time, make sure you educate yourself about the process and take all safety steps. Never assume you know what you are doing.
  4. Make sure your smoke alarms are working correctly. Test them prior to cooking Thanksgiving dinner.
  5. Keep your floors clean, dry and free of obstructions (especially in the kitchen). This will help to prevent slipping hazards – something that is very common during damp fall weather.
  6. Avoid overloading electrical outlets in the kitchen when preparing dinner.
  7. Be careful when moving hot pots and dishes around when preparing dinner. Use high quality oven mitts and trivets.
  8. Make sure that all food is cooked properly, especially the turkey. Read all cooking instructions properly to ensure the turkey is cooked thoroughly and has the correct internal temperature.
