Fire Safety for the Outdoors– Campfire and BBQ Fire Safety Tips

With the weather heating up, the topic of fire safety is starting to shift from indoors to outdoors. With more people spending time outside in their backyard and at the cottage, it is the time of the year for BBQ’s and campfires with friends and family.

Now is the perfect time to review fire safety to make sure you enjoy your summer outings in a safe manner. Consider these BBQ and campfire tips:

Fire Safety Tips for BBQ

Even though most people don’t think twice about using a BBQ, they can still be a fire hazard if not used properly. Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Check the tank before you use it at the beginning of the season
  • Always BBQ in a well-ventilated area and never do so indoors
  • Check the burners and hoses before using them
  • Clean your BBQ – make sure all grease is cleaned off
  • Check for propane leaks
  • Keep children and pets away from the BBQ when it is in use
  • Make sure you turn off the BBQ when you are finished – allow time for it to cool down before placing the cover back on

Campfire Safety Tips

With more and more people having fire pits in their back yards and with cottage and camping season quickly approaching, it is import to refresh your mind about these campfire safety tips:

  • Always have water close by, just in case the fire gets out of control
  • Always keep an eye on children around the campfire – teach them about fire safety
  • Never use gasoline, lighter fluid or other highly flammable liquid to light the fire
  • Make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed
  • Refrain from throwing objects in the fire – you never know how they will react to heat and they could cause injury to people close to the campfire
  • Never leave the fire unattended
  • Choose an ideal location for the fire, away from other flammable items, if a fire pit is not already present
  • Be conscious of things that could catch fire that are in close proximity
  • Don’t sit too close to the fire
