Dangerous Travel Locations: How to Stay Safe when Travelling Abroad

February 16th, 2015  |  Travel Insurance

Travel is a fun hobby: you get to see the world, meet new people, and experience new things. But it can also be stressful and even dangerous.

While many of us are likely looking to get away from the everyday this winter with a nice trip, be careful of where you choose to book, as you could be putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

Here is a list of some of the most dangerous cities in the world to travel to:

  1. Caracas, Venezuela
  2. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
  3. Cape Town, South Africa
  4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  5. Guatemala City, Guatemala
  6. Acapulco, Mexico
  7. Baghdad, Iraq
  8. Kabul, Afghanistan
  9. Karachi, Pakistan
  10. San Pedro Sura, Honduras

How to stay safe when you travel

If you are planning a trip this winter, make sure you keep yourself safe. This doesn’t only mean doing your research on where to go—and where not to go—but it also means keeping yourself safe on the trip itself.

  • In-room safe.Spending a few dollars on a safe in your room can protect you from having to spend thousands later on replacing documents. Keep all of your important documents in the safe, as well as any cash or jewelry that you don’t need to have on your person.
  • A bag that you wear on your body. When walking on busy streets, it’s best to keep your valuables as close to your body as possible. Invest in a satchel that you can wear under your clothes, and in which you can keep a small amount of cash.
  • Travel insurance. No one wants to imagine the worst happening while you’re on vacation, but it’s important to be prepared. Spending a few hundred dollars on travel insurance can prevent you from losing as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars should the unthinkable occurs. If you do find yourself in the scary situation of an accident or serious illness while away from home, the last thing you want to do is have to worry about money. It is also important that you read all documents pertaining to yourtravel insurance, and ensure you understand exactly what is covered.

A safe traveller is a happy traveller

The best way to ensure you have a wonderful, stress-free holiday is to plan ahead, and always keep safety in the back of your mind. If you do that, you will surely enjoy your trip even more!
