Common Insurance Mistakes Made by Consumers

August 4th, 2012  |  Auto Insurance

When it comes to getting auto insurance coverage many consumers make common insurance errors and mistakes that impact their coverage. While some of these are honest mistakes, others are done on purpose in an attempt to get a better deal or additional coverage.

When filling out any information for your insurer always make sure that you double check to make sure it is correct. And, if there is something that you are not clear on, always ask and get clarification before moving forward.

In an attempt to bring some of the common insurance mistakes to light, the following are some of the mistakes that are most commonly seen by auto insurance companies:

  • Not taking the time to understand coverage:Many consumers fail to take the time to understand all of the different elements that make up their car insurance coverage. This often leads to having too much or too little coverage.

  • Not providing accurate information:When seeking out auto insurance quotes, consumers often submit incorrect or incomplete information with their application. This leads to inaccurate quotes and will reduce a person’s chance of getting coverage that is specifically catered to their situation and needs.

  • Not getting quotes:In an attempt to get things done quickly, many consumers do not seek out multiple auto insurance quotes. The more quotes you get, the better chance you will have of getting a better rate.

  • Making an incorrect claim:Making an incorrect claim is serious. If you knowingly omit details or leave out information on purpose, you are committing insurance fraud. Make sure everything you submit is accurate.

  • Not notifying your insurer of changes:You need to inform your insurer of changes in your life. If your contact information changes, your changes addresses, or if you get a new car, you need to call your insurance provider and notify them of the changes.
