Are you Covered? Travel Insurance for Winter Holiday Activities

December 30th, 2014  |  Travel Insurance

We all know getting travel insurance is even more important when travelling during the winter. The winter weather and the potential for travel delays only add to the chances of your trip not going off as planned.

However, did you know that you may not be completely covered by travel insurance if you are injured while participating in winter sports and activities while on your trip?

Standard travel insurance policies may or may not include winter activities

No two travel insurance policies are the same, and depending on your insurance provider, you may not be covered if you are injured while skiing or snowboarding. Many standard travel insurance policies do not include coverage for winter holiday activities.

NEVER assume you have coverage

Most people assume they are covered for winter activities when signing up for travel insurance. They also have a tendency to overlook the fine print, with most skimming over it at best.

Never make assumptions when it comes to any type of insurance coverage. If you are planning on travelling this winter and engaging in winter sports, make sure your policy covers the activities you will be participating in.

What happens if I get hurt and I don’t have coverage?

If you are injured while skiing and it is not covered in your travel insurance policy, you could be on the hook for the emergency medical costs. This could be extremely expensive, especially if you need to be flown home or require a hospital stay.

You can avoid all these potential issues simply by talking with your insurance broker and making sure you are covered for winter sports.

What activities are included in winter sports travel insurance?

What is and is not covered in a winter sports travel insurance policy will vary based on the insurance provider.  In general, winter sports coverage includes typical activities such as skiing, snowboarding and skating.

However, some policies may also include coverage for extreme forms of skiing, ice hockey, snowmobile, tobogganing, ice climbing and many other winter activities.

Do you make sure you are covered for winter sports activities when you take out a travel insurance policy? Or do you risk it? Tell us about your experience with travel insurance on winter ski trips.
