Alberta considering increasing penalties for distracted driving

November 12th, 2013  |  Insurance

Two years after distracted driving legislation was introduced in the province, Alberta transportation minister Ric McIver is looking into the possibility of tougher penalties for drivers caught engaging in distracted driving practices. In a recent story written in the Edmonton Journal, the transportation minister announced that they are looking into the options the province has to help make roads safer and reduce distracted driving.

Much like in other areas of the country, it is clear that the message is still not having the impact that it needs to. Drivers continue to engage in distracted driving, are using their phones while driving, and doing other things that take their attention and eyes off of the road when they are behind the wheel.

Distracted driving is widely considered to be one of the leading factors of accidents in Alberta and around the world. Currently the fine for distracted driving in Alberta is $172, which is similar to the penalty that is in place in Ontario.

The transportation minister is considering stiffer penalties, and the possibility of demerit points, something that is also being considered in Ontario. Currently, only Manitoba has legislation in place that adds demerit points to a driver’s record if they are caught driving distracted.

Like many other new laws, it does take time for drivers to adjust their driving habits. Maybe stiffer penalties will make drivers think twice about talking on their phone or taking their focus off the road when driving.

Do you think distracted driving is a serious issue? Are you guilty of distracted driving? What do you think needs to be done to reduce the instances of distracted driving?
