6 Tips to get your Car Road Trip Ready

March 23rd, 2012  |  Auto Insurance

Summer is definitely road trip season. It is a great time to get away, explore and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. While fun is the main priority, you also need to make sure that you are properly prepared for your trip and protected if something does not go according to plan.

The following are some useful tips for you to consider as you plan your summer road trip around Ontario or throughout the country:

  1. Check your insurance coverage: Make sure that your car insurance is up to date and that you are covered in the area that you will be travelling. Make sure that anyone who will be taking turns driving is covered. And, make sure your roadside assistance is up to date.

  2. Get your car serviced: If you plan on putting some serious kilometers on your car during the trip, make sure that your car is in tip top shape. Make sure it has been serviced recently, check the tires, check the oil, and have any lingering issues looked at by a mechanic before you leave. The last thing you want is a breakdown.

  3. Pack an emergency kit: Include items such as blankets, batteries, water, and tools. And, don’t forget to have a spare tire and jack just in case.

  4. Brush up on the law: If you are travelling to an area you are not familiar with, take some time before you leave to look up the laws in that area.

  5. Pack efficiently: No one wants to be cramped into a car, especially for a road trip. Only bring what you need and will use on the trip. Plus less weight will use less fuel and help you save on gas.

  6. Get a GPS: These can save a lot of headaches. GPS will not only provide you with directions, but they can also tell you useful information about locating gas stations, places to eat, and sites to see.

Getting yourself and your car ready for a road trip will help you avoid any issues when you are on the road. No one wants to get stuck on the side of the road, especially if you are not prepared for it.
