6 home improvement tasks to tackle this fall

September 4th, 2017  |  Home

With summer officially ending in a few weeks, many homeowners will soon be looking for ways to occupy their weekends. Thanks to the cooler weather, autumn is a great time to look at your to do list and cross off these six home improvement tasks to tackle this fall.

1. Clear the rain gutters

Avoid water build up and freezing by clearing your rain gutters. Some people like to clear their gutters out a few times a year, while others wait until their neighbourhood trees are bare. Whichever you prefer, plan to do it at least once a year in the fall. Clogged rain gutters can lead to large and dangerous icicles forming and hanging down straight over your front door.

2. Repair the roof

To prevent damage caused by having a leaky roof all winter, take some time in the fall to examine your roof for damage. If the damage is minor, you can hire someone or DIY a fix before the snow falls. If you find more extensive damage, it might be worth looking into getting a new roof entirely.

3. Complete a major renovation

A home improvement project to tackle this fall could be as simple as clearing your rain gutters or as elaborate as building an extension on your home. Whatever the task, hiring off-season workers in the fall can add up to real cost savings.

4. Maintain the furnace and air system

Preventative maintenance on your furnace and air quality systems can save you a bunch of money down the road. Test your heating system to make sure it still works each fall. If, after an overnight test, you find your home isn’t as warm as it used to be, you might be due for a furnace tune up. At the same time, remember to replace your air filter.

5. Get ready for winter

Do you remember feeling chilly inside your house last winter? Depending on the age of your home, you might need to look at replacing the windows or doors or adding insulation to your walls and ceiling. Even the coldest homeowners often forget their winter blues once spring and summer hit. However, with a chill is in the air, fall is a great time to tackle these home improvement tasks.

6. Winterize your equipment

To get ready for winter, there are a couple minor things you should do as preventative maintenance to your property. First, you’ll need to seal any cracks around your home, as well as your driveway. Then, remove or cover air conditioning units and bring all of your outdoor patio furniture inside. Tackling these things in the fall protects your property from a damaging early snowfall.
