July 27th, 2014  |  Home Insurance

So it’s time to head up to the cottage!

Even though most treat their time at the cottage as a way to get away from everyday life and their daily routine, there are still a few things that you need to bring with you – one of the most important is an awareness for nature. Even though you are on vacation, you can still be environmentally friendly in your approach to your time off.

Here are a number of ways that you can be environmentally conscious at the cottage this summer:

   1.  Carpool on the way up to the cottage

The cottage is often a meeting place for friends and family. Rather than everyone taking their own car, why not carpool up to the cottage. This is not only an environmentally friendly travel option; it will also save you money on gas. Plus, you will have more people to talk to on your way up to the cottage. Check out these5 tips to beat the cottage traffic.

   2.  Be energy conscious

The little things add up. Doing things like watching how much water you consume, turning off lights you are not using, and making that extra effort to use as little energy as possible.

   3.  Cook on the open fire

Being at the cottage is your opportunity to do things differently. Instead of using electricity to cook, why not prepare your meals on the open fire to get the real cottage experience?

   4.  Be respectful of nature

Most cottages are surrounded by nature. Therefore, it is important for you to be respectful of nature and do you best not to interfere with it.

   5.  Clean up your mess

Whether you are at the cottage or at a camp ground, always clean up your mess. Recycle what you can, generate as little garbage as possible, and do not leave anything that could put the local environment or animals in danger.

   6.  Watch what you burn

Many people use the camp fire as a way to get rid of garbage. However, this can be very dangerous. Certain materials release toxic substances into the air and can do harm to the environment and to you. So, watch what you put into the campfire.
