5 Tips for throwing an inexpensive Halloween party

October 20th, 2016  |  Personal Finance

If there’s one thing that I’m pretty awful at, it’s dressing up for Halloween. I never seem to get the right costume. I usually shop around, can’t decide on what I want to dress up as, and then I get upset with myself for not having a clever costume. Even though that’s a bit of a wash, I still like Halloween.

I really love a good, old-fashioned Halloween party at my condo. The best part? You don’t need a lot of money to make it amazing. Here’s how to throw an epic-- and inexpensive -- Halloween party.

1. Set a costume theme

The best part of Halloween for adults is dressing up as something silly and letting loose for the night. The problem is that costumes can get pretty expensive. One thing that helps is to set a theme for your costumes so that your guests don’t have to stress about what they should dress up as. A theme will make the party more exciting because you’re all going to try to think of something unique.

2. Have some fun activities

I always enjoy when a party actually has activities going on. You can have a pumpkin carving contest or play around with different games that will keep your guests entertained. A costume contest always goes over well because it forces your guests to use a little creativity to try to win. You don’t have to spend a fortune to plan a few activities for everyone.

3. Visit the dollar store

No party can be official until you make a visit to the Dollar Store. You can load up on fun little games, supplies, snacks, and decorations. The Dollar Store has it all when it comes to planning a party.

4. Make it a nighttime affair

I prefer to throw parties late at night so that I don’t have to serve dinner. You can save some money because you won’t have to stress about buying and preparing a meal. You can do a potluck, offer just drinks, or provide light snacks. You can also make a list of what everyone should bring to the party so that you’re not on the hook for every single expense. When everyone shares, everyone can afford it.

5. Play scary movies

It’s not a Halloween party with a marathon of scary movies. This is my favourite part of Halloween parties. I always look forward to watching the classics. I would start researching classic Halloween movies right now just to plan out what you’re going to play.

Good luck on throwing that Halloween party. Hopefully, someone will invite you to their Christmas party so that you can take the next holiday off from hosting.
