5 Strategies for Scooping Up a Last-Minute Holiday Getaway

November 4th, 2014  |  Travel Insurance

There are no shortages of families that use the holiday season as an opportunity to plan a family getaway somewhere warm or hit the slopes and do some skiing or snowboarding. It’s one of the few times during the year when the family can coordinate their schedules and plan to be in the same place at the same time, especially if you have kids in college or family living in different cities.

While we all know that it’s a busy time of the year to travel, for some reason many of us still have a tendency to delay and wait to book our vacations during the holiday season. This often leads many people having to alter their travel plans because resorts and flights are booked.

But, there is good news.

You can still scoop up last minute holiday getaways. You just need to know how to do it. Here are 5 strategies to help you book a great last minute holiday trip this year:

  1. Search for deals daily: If you want to get a good deal on your trip, or simply find a reasonable flight time and resort rate, you will need to stay on top of things. Sign up for travel websites, get their daily emails, and search online each day until you find the trip you want at the price you want to pay. Book it right away!
  2. Be flexible: Flexibility is always an important factor when booking last minute trips. If possible, be flexible on travel dates, resorts, and even locations. There are lots of beaches and ski slopes out there, so try not to get your heart set on a specific location or resort.
  3. Book your trip in pieces: Let’s face it – when you book last minute, you will likely pay more than you want to for your trip. But, rather than looking for travel packages, considering booking your flight, accommodations, and other aspects of your trip separately. You may be able to save money on all individual parts of your trip – adding up to greater savings overall.
  4. Consider condo rentals and other accommodations: Rather than focusing on resort accommodations, consider renting a condo or a suite at a hotel. You may be able to save money, while still being able to stay close to your desired travel destination.
  5. Go offline: Yes, brick and mortar travel agencies still exist. Taking a trip to see your local travel agent could help you find the exact trip you want. Also, calling and talking to an agent directly could also open up some travel options for you to consider. The internet is not your only option.

Are you going away this holiday season? Are you planning to book a trip? What tips can you offer to others trying to book a last minute holiday getaway?
