5 Residential Driving Tips to Keep Our Roads Safe

June 10th, 2014  |  Auto Insurance

While it is important to be a safe and effective driver no matter what type of road you are driving on, drivers need to pay extra attention when driving in residential areas. Driving in the suburbs and residential areas are filled with potential distractions and things you need to be on the lookout for at all times. There is generally more happening in residential areas on and near roadways and you will be required to stop more often when driving in these areas.

While most drivers are aware of the potential dangers that are looming in their neighborhood, it’s always a good idea to get a refresher and review important residential driving tips.

5 Residential Driving Tips All Drivers Must Take Into Account

  1. Pay extra attention in school zones: School zones are arguably one of the most important areas that you must pay extra attention as a driver. Slow down and always be on the lookout for children when driving near or close to schools in your neighborhood.
  2. Slow down: With kids, pets, stop signs, school zones, cyclists, and pedestrians, it should go without saying that you need to slow down when driving in residential areas.
  3. Watch out for children: Residential areas and children go hand in hand. Every residential area will have more children out and about, playing in the driveway, at the park, and almost everywhere else. Always keep your eyes peeled for children who may suddenly dart out into traffic. You can never be too careful with your driving when children are present.
  4. Take extra care at stop signs/cross walks: Make sure that you come to a full and complete stop at stop signs and make sure you slow down when driving past cross walks (even if the lights are not flashing). If pedestrians are present, make sure you make eye contact before proceeding through the intersection.
  5. Avoid all distractions: We all know that distracted driving is an issue that we can no longer overlook and it is even more important to avoid driving while distracted in residential areas. You never know when you will need to make a sudden stop for a child, pet, and for other vehicle. Always be on the lookout and keep your eyes on the road, not on your phone!

What do you think is the biggest issue when it comes to residential driving? What do drivers need to do to make residential areas safer for everyone?
