20 Summer Water Safety Tips for the Pool, Beach, and Cottage

During a hot summer day there is nothing like taking a dip in the pool, hitting the beach, or taking a swim in the lake at the cottage to cool off. While the water is a great place to cool off and enjoy the summer weather, it can also be dangerous. It only takes a second for something to go wrong.

Whether you are with family or friends, it’s important that you take water safety seriously, even if you are a strong swimmer. To refresh your memory and to ensure that everyone enjoys the water this summer in a safe manner, we have put together the following water safety tips:

Water Safety Tips at the Beach

  1. Make sure to check that the water is safe and no swimming bans are in effect
  2. Never swim out too far from shore – especially if you are not a strong swimmer
  3. Keep an eye on young children and non-swimmers at all times
  4. Be conscious of potential dangers that exist under the water – rocks, uneven surfaces, etc.
  5. Always follow the beach rules and instructions of lifeguards on duty
  6. Don’t forget the sunscreen 
  7. Watch out for boats and other floatation devices

Water Safety Tips at the Pool

  1. Have pool rules and follow the pool rules 
  2. Keep an eye on children at all times when they are in the pool
  3. Avoid diving head first into the water
  4. Keep the pool deck clear of tripping hazards such as toys and other items
  5. Never swim alone, especially at night
  6. Always have emergency and safety equipment on hand

Water Safety Tips at the Cottage

  1. Make sure the water is safe to swim
  2. Never jump/dive into unfamiliar water
  3. Never operate a boat if you have been drinking 
  4. Always wear a lifejacket when on a boat
  5. Avoid swimming during adverse weather conditions
  6. Slow down and operate jet skis and other watercrafts in a safe manner
  7. Never underestimate the power of water currents and waves

No matter where you are swimming this summer, it’s important to do so safely. Never swim alone and make sure you always err on the side of caution and safety when cooling off in the pool, or at the beach or cottage this summer.
